uOttawa’s Student-Led and Managed Investment Club
TFSIG is a student investment club founded in 2020 to bridge the gap between studies and practical experience in finance. We aim to prepare students at the Telfer School of Management and the University of Ottawa for opportunities in capital markets.
TFSIG is an official club of the University of Ottawa under CVUO and the Telfer School of Management under the Telfer Finance Society (TFS) and the Telfer Student Association (AÉTSA).
Purpose
To provide a platform for students to apply what they have learned in their coursework to the real world and to develop a network of students who can assist them in their recruiting process and career development beyond their undergraduate program.
Vision
TFSIG aims to be an organization comprising the brightest students at the University of Ottawa who seek to enhance each other’s learning and professional development, ultimately improving our career success during and after the completion of our undergraduate programs.
Mission
To be a compelling asset of Telfer’s finance program and the broader undergraduate community through our facilitation of enhanced learning, awareness, and the success of our members.
Structure
Organization
TFSIG has an Executive Team that oversees five distinct industry groups, each consisting of Portfolio Managers and Equity Analysts.
Activity
Industry groups are responsible for producing multiple pitches and industry reports over the course of the year at our weekly meetings. Pitches are critiqued by members of the fund and an investment decision is made through a position-weighted voting scheme.
Telfer Finance Society Partnership
TFS Investment Group is an official yet independently operated subsidiary of the Telfer Finance Society. The agreement was settled in August of 2020 and reflects our shared goal to provide resources for students that assist them in obtaining opportunities in the finance industry.
Industry Group Allocation
The industry group structure of TFSIG allows students to develop expertise within a specific industry, in addition to the financial skillset they acquire.
Students are allocated to industry groups based on their interests and skillset, typically upon receiving an offer. While some students may be specifically targeted to join a industry group by a Portfolio Manager, most apply to the overall fund and not to specific groups.
